King Kong : The Review
The primary reason that made me catch KK last night was simply to recapture the memories of childhood where i watch KK for the first time in a cartoon series. During that era, KK and the fellow marvel comic superheroes such as spiderman, batman, superman were the 'IN' thing back then..haha..well nowadays the cartoon heros are getting more unrealistic so hence i have already lost touch with most of them.
Peter Jackson's remaking of this epic movie is truly a masterpiece, masterclass level movie. In the 1990s, we have Steven Spieburg who masterminded the making of epics such as Jurassic Park 1 & 2; his vision for the movie industry totally transformed and brought the movie industry up to the next level. Right now in the 21st century, we have Peter Jackson who brought us Lord of the Rings series and now King Kong. The heavy usage of 3D technology in this film was put into optimum effect as dinosaurs and giant lizards and cockroaches were brought to life. Unlike some films in which movie-goers will feel nauseous after being overdosed with 3D effects, KK was unlike any other films. This was because of the seamless integration between the plot and the effects, not just simply merging things together technologically.
King Kong is a movie about a giant man eating and nature destroying ape being brought into captivity by a group of sea-faring sailors and an eccentric director; played by Jack Black. Ironically, Jack Black's appearance in the movie bears a form of resemblelance to Peter Jackson's real life apperance. Bearded and Unkempt. Well, King Kong's captivity was expressed in 2 ways; in the natural physical sense where he was knocked out unconscious by the cholorform used by the group of sea-faring sailors when they lured him out of the skull island. But at the same time, KK was also captured emotionally after the time he spend with the blonde girl; Ann where she was captured by the tribal people and offered up to him as a living sacrifice.
The beautiful part of the movie is when you're able to view and feel the emotions surging through the girl and KK and the evolving of his character through the movie; from a savage beast to a tame animal who just wants to find his true love in his life; after living in loneliness for the most part of his life i presume. Just as the eccentric director Jack Black puts it in the movie, KK was not eventually subdued and captured by the American fighter planes who fired on him while he was on the Empire State building but he was subdued and eventually gave his life up when he was able to once again be together with the girl he loved so much. The numerous times that KK used his life to protect the blonde girl while in the jungle fighting with 2 T-Rexs and subsequently in New York where he battled the soldiers and the fighter planes represent an in-built desire within everyone of us to love and protect the ppl around us.
Although i don't believe in evolution and that humans came from monkeys or apes, i see KK as a metaphoric representation of the innate human feelings we have that was placed in us by God our Father and Creator. Jesus came and went up to the cross 2000 years ago and He too died for ppl whom didn't love Him and some hated Him for the things He had done. Jesus cared and loved the ppl unselfishly, gave and expected none in return.
KK is truly a movie you should catch and watch not just because of its special effects or its grostque scenes of human tribal sacrifices and ceremonies, but lets look beyond the surface presentation of the movie and look into the heart and emotions of KK himself. After watching it last night, though the movie was 3 hours long, but i never felt any discomfort in me as i was watching simply because i was captivated by the plot and storyline.
King Kong; a true masterpiece epic movie. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
